Some 123 PHARE projects in Romania were discovered with frauds which translates in some 2.3 million euro in money recovered to the state budget over the past year, Development minister Laszlo Borbely has declared. Besides the sums the state already recovered, there are another 35 judicial sentences to be implemented, with a total value of 800,000 euro.

According to the minister, some 287 trials are currently in progress in which the state needs to recover significant amounts to the budget. Some of the reasons which determined authorities to request back the grants were:

  • funds were used for other projects than those contracted
  • technical and financial objectives were not complied with
  • conflict of interest
  • the final report was not submitted
