Romania registered, after the first five months of this year, a 8.8 billion euro trade deficit as compared to 7.9 billion euro in the similar period in 2007, and was classed as having the sixth greatest European trade deficit, according to Eurostat estimations. The biggest deficit was registered by Britain with 50.1 billion euro.

In the first five months of this year, the Union's trade deficit deepened to over 120.2 billion euro as compared to 91.6 billion euro in the same period last year. In June alone, the Union's deficit amounted to 20.1 billion euro, as compared to 9.1 billion euro in the similar month last year.

In Romania, during the mentioned period, the level of imports was high and thus the country's deficit deepened to 8.8 billion euro. To be more precise, exports exceeded 13.7 billion euro, with a 17% increase as compared to the same period last year but the imports level exceeded 22.5 billion euro.
