The Romanian government has established the minimum social pension through an emergency ordinance: starting April 1, the minimum social pension will amount 300 Ron and will increase to 350 Ron starting October 1. Labor minister Marian Sarbu declared that all pensioners residing in Romania and who currently receive a pension that is lower than the minimum guaranteed would be entitled to the new pension.

Sarbu declared that, starting April 1, 2009 some 808,000 people will benefit of the new scheme, of which 455,000 pensioners from the public system and 353,000 pensioners from the agricultural sector. Starting October 1, their number will reach 1,081,000 people.
