Romania's commercial deficit decreased 60% in January, down to 576.4 million Euros, from 1,45% billion Euros in January 2008, the data at the National Statistics Institute indicate. The decrease is due to a faster decreased of imports, compared to the decrease of exports.

In January, the exports dropped 24.3%, down to 1.91 billion Euros, while imports decreased 37.4%, to 2.48 billion Euros. In RON, Romania's national currency, the deficit was 2.39 billion lei, 2.91 billion lei less than in January 2008.

Cars and various equipment stood for 38% of the exports and 33.3% of the imports. 77.7% of the exports and 73.7% of the imports were within the European Union.
