The volume of the construction works dropped 6.3% during the first seven months of the current year against their volume in 2008. And this despite the fact that residential buildings construction increased by 8.3%. Engineering and non-residential buildings continued to record drops in construction volume, according to the Romanian National Statistics Institute (INS) data.

The decrease in engineering constructions amounted to 14.1% and 3.5% for non-residential buildings, from January to the end of July. The volume for construction works in July only dropped 9% against June and recorded a -14.1% against July, 2008.

In the first semester, Romania's construction department dropped 5% against the same period last year. The construction of residential buildings increased by 11.7% against the same period last year, but did not manage to influence positively the shrinking construction volume trend.
