Prime Minister Calin Popescu-Tariceanu declared during the winter gathering of the European Council in Brussels that Romania will not recognize the independence of the Kosovo province. Tariceanu said, for Realitatea TV, that there is a wide interest in supporting a common position of this issue, at an European level.

"There is a problem in which Romania has a well identified position: we will not recognize an independent Kosovo because we have serious restraints regarding the way such a statute should be agreed with and the possible consequences on the entire region of the West Balkans", said the prime minister.

Officials in Brussels declared a few days ago that EU is ready to recognize the Kosovo province independence, but that member states will be free to decide on their own whether they support or not the new state.
