The opposition Democrat Liberals (PD-L) submitted in the House of Deputies on Tuesday a simple motion against the first car registration tax but House speaker Bogdan Olteanu, a representative of the governing Liberal party (PNL), refused to register the document.

The decision to submit the document was previously announced by the PD-L leader Emil Boc after a party meeting last week. The simple motion had two objectives: to repeal the first car registration tax and return the money for the citizens who have already paid it over the past year, Boc explained.

The first car registration tax, introduced early last year, has been the subject of many quarrels between Bucharest and the European Commission, but more recently the Romanian Government announced it would change it to fall in line with the European position.

Bogdan Olteanu said he rejected the motion because it was illegally introduced. Olteanu declared that the motion needed to be submitted during a public session of the House.
