Participating at the launching of a book by Constantin Ticu Dumitrescu, one of the most notorious anti-Communist dissidents, Romania president Traian Basescu said that he would never dare to call himself an anti-Communist, but reminded that he put some effort into making the truth about Communism known to everyone. Basescu added that the communist structures no longer function in Romania, but the young generation still must know about the 50 years of Communist oppression.

In 2006, president Traian Basescu formally and officially condemned the Communist regime, publishing the so-called Tismaneanu Report (Vladimir Tismaneanu is the historian who put up the report), unveiling the Communist crimes.
