Former Romanian President Ion Iliescu, now honorary leader of the opposition Social Democrats, considers the idea of writing his memoirs. At least, this is what Iliescu writes on his blog, saying that he needs more time to read and write and, possibly, to write his memoirs.

Iliescu declared that due to the uninominal voting system, he considers that it is best to pave the way for other young Social Democrats since time has come for him to retire from public life.

Iliescu led Romania for most of the post-communist nineties and the early 2000's and his name is widely associated with second tier leaders of the Communist regime and with violent breakdown of opposition protests in Bucharest when he was in power.
