Romanian President Traian Basescu has asked for additional war vehicles for Romanian soldiers in Afghanistan during discussions in Kandahar with general Stanley McCrystal on Thursday, March 4. The request follows the decision to increase the number of Romanian soldiers in the region.

The Romanian chief of state visited Afghanistan on Thursday to meet the Romanian troops dislocated to Qualat and Kandahar. On the airport in Kandahar, Basescu was greeted by NATO troupes commander in Afghanistan General Stanley McCrystal and by British General Nick Carter.

"During discussions with General Stanley McCrystal, President Traian Basescu requested the American party to supplement the number of war vehicles for Romanian troupes", having in mind that the Romanian militaries number in Afghanistan is going to increase this year, an Presidential Administration communiqué shows.

The Romanian President paid a surprise visit to the Romanian soldiers in Afghanistan on returning from his two-day official visit in Kazakhstan.
