The newly re-elected President of Georgia, Mikhail Saakashvili was officially appointed in office during a special ceremony organized in front of the Parliament on Sunday. Six heads of state took part in the event, among which Romania President Traian Basescu. The ceremony also hosted some 20 delegates from other states as well as NATO, EU and UN representatives.

Despite the Georgian opposition's challenging of the election results that saw Saakashvili remain to power, the official results were clear to indicate that some 53% of the votes went to Saakashvili. He was re-elected president despite the vigorous anti-campaign lead by the opposition forces.
