Several European MPs urge the European Commission to investigate the effects of supermarkets upon producers and consumers. Moreover, they could ask the European Commission to propose some measures and rules to protect both consumers and producers of abuses.

European parliamentarians will start talks with the Competition Directorate to investigate the way supermarkets behave on the market. Basically, the MPs fear the creation of a monopoly, since only several supermarket brands mushroom all over Europe.

European supermarket giants include Carrefour, Metro, Tesco, Rewe and Schwarz Group. They jointly cover some 70% of the whole market.
