Romanians living in Italy are not very interested in the upcoming administrative elections across the country. According to the data of the Central Electoral Office, in Rome, where some 40,000 Romanians could vote, only eight submitted their request five days before the deadline expires.

Even if the deadline set by the law to register Eu citizens on the supplementary electoral lists for the April 13 and 14 elections expired on March 4, Romanians could claim voter certificates through a special procedure, Italian Interior Ministry representative Antonella Alvaro told HotNews.ro.

She argued that Italian authorities are accepting all requests even if the official deadline has past, to make sure that there are many people voting. Thus, the Mayor in each city will offer those interested a voting certificate if all necessary conditions are met.

Alvaro said that the exact number of Romanians voting in the elections will only be made public after the election day. She said that some 9710 EU citizens voted in the previous elections in the 830 Italian cities, on May 27 and 28, 2007. Among these, Romanians totaled 5100.
