Serbian Prime Minister Vojilav Kostunica announced in a press conference on Saturday that he would resign following a governmental crisis linked to the independence of Kosovo and EU relations. He called for elections and explained that his government was not able to function properly due to the lack of cohesion of the coalition, Reuters informs.

Kostunica added that parliamentary elections should be held in the same time with local elections, on May 11. France Presse relates that the Serbian PM requested an emergency meeting of his cabinet to decide whether to dissolve the Parliament or not. The meeting would take place this Monday.

Local journalists declared for CNN that Kostunica needed to officially submit his resignation to the government and Parliament and only then his resignation is official. Rador reads that Kostunica could not reach any consensus with his pro-Western coalition partners.
