The European Union suggests in a draft tabled on Friday the increase of taxes on diesel up to the level of taxes applied to lead-free gas, from 302 euro per 1,000 liters to 359 euro per 1,000 liters. The Commission first suggested 2012 as term for the aligning, but European deputies decided that 2015 is a fair term.

Romania, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Bulgaria have to align the taxes in 2016. In 2008, the minimum excise for diesel is 274 euro per 1,000 liters.

The measure suggested by the EU aims at reducing the "tourism for fuel" and the impact on environment.
