British workers are appalled that foreign workers coming mainly from Romania, Bulgaria and Albania accept to work for 28 euro/day, the equivalent of a third of the minimum wage in Britain, Daily Express reads.

As the economic crisis unfolds, the work force demand especially in the constructions sector has decreased considerably and immigrants are willing to work for lower wages than their British counterparts. A Romanian worker quoted by Daily Express complains that he would accept any payment since he can barely find work.

Conservative Party Immigration spokesperson Damian Green declared that nobody should work for such little money and employers who offer such low wages should be caught and condemned. Foreign workers accept payments in cash to avoid paying taxes or insurances. A young Romanian worker, Claudiu Roman said that when he first came to Britain in 2007 he could find work everywhere but now he only works one or two days a week, if lucky.
