Volkswagen leads the top car brands in Europe with the biggest market share of 11.3% followed by Ford, Fiat and Opel whose shares are over 7% each, the latest data of the European Car Constructors Association reads. The European car market dropped by 16% in the first four months.

In the 28 countries included in the statistics, some 4.7 million new cars were sold in the first four months of the year, compared to 5.58 million in January-April 2008. Volkswagen managed to increase its market share from 10% to 11.3%, followed by Ford with 9.1%.

Dacia's market share increased from 1.1% to 1.4% and its sales increased by 6% to 65,000 cars.
