Romania contributed with 1.217 billion euro to the EU budget in 2008 which represents 1.1% of the total EU revenues and received 2.6 billion euro through various programs and financial instruments, a financial report on the EU budget, published on Tuesday, September 22 by the European Commission reads. By contrast, France contributed with 18 billion euro and received only 13 while Germany contributed with 22.2 billion euro and received only 11.1 billion euro.

Romania contributed with 1.217 billion euro to the 2008 EU budget, representing 1.1% of the total revenues. The biggest contributors for 2008 were Germany with 22.215 billion euro, representing 20% of total revenues, France with 18 billion euro and Italy with 15 billion euro. The smallest contributions came from Malta with 60 million euro, Estonia with 161 million euro and Cyprus with 175 million euro.

Romania received in 2008 2.6 billion euro from the EU budget, allocated on eight directions: competitiveness, natural resources, liberty and justice, administration, compensations. The biggest sums were allocated for the management of natural resources, namely 1 billion euro. For external assistance offered, the EU paid Romania some 774 million euro while for competitiveness and cohesion Romania received 36.4 and 648.5 million euro.
