Romania’s national women's handball team won against Denmark in the first 2009 World Cup match. Radu Voina's students obtained the first Group A victory in Aarhus, defeating the competition’s host, score 28 to 22.

Romania didn't start the match on the right foot: Denmark ruled the first quarter of hour. The score reading 9-6 in favour of the hosts, Romania's team mobilised in defence and prevented the Danish to mark for nearly 10 minutes. Coach Radu Voina's inspiration and the team's dedication paid off and Romania was leading 14-11 before the break. In the second round, the Romanian team saw at tie at 19-19, but they stayed focused and won at six goals difference, score 28-22.
