Netherlands was always favorable to Romania and Bulgaria joining Schengen but just like France, we consider that at this moment, the two countries are not ready to join, Dutch Immigration minister Gerd Leers declared. He talks, in an interview for RFI about an issue of trust in his attempt to explain the delay.

It is very important to consider not only Schengen’s strict rules but also other criteria like corruption and criminality rates, the Dutch official said. He said the borders of the two countries will become the borders of the EU which is why there has to be a 100% trust that these two countries can counter fluxes coming from other countries. It is also important to put forward strict standards, which Romania and Bulgaria can comply with.
