The criminal investigation opened against former Romania president Ion Iliescu for the miners' mayhem in 1990 was closed, Prosecutor General Laura Codruta Kovesi announced in a press conference on Friday. Kovesi mentioned that "Ion Iliescu was never subpoenaed and there was no statement taken from him in 17 years".

The prosecutor general announced that the Superior Judges' Council was informed in this fact and it has to take a decision on the procedure errors in the file. Kovesi took the opportunity to demand a thorough check of all Military Prosecution Offices in the country. Still, Kovesi says, the investigations on the 1990 events, when thousands of miners called by Iliescu came to Bucharest and violently repressed an anti-Communist demonstration, will continue and that Iliescu still has to testify in the case.
