Former Pakistan Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto died in an attack while at an electoral event of former PM and opposition leader Nawaz Sharif in Rawalpindi, near Islamabad, on Thursday. Dozens of people were killed in the attack, AFP informs, quoting Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Cheema.

CNN, quoting Bhutto's husband, previously announced that she was wounded in the neck area and was transported to a local emergency hospital in shock. The wound was caused by bomb fragments.

The attack took place in the vicinity of a building where Bhutto was supposed to meet Opposition leaders, in the attempt to unify the Opposition for the nearing elections, scheduled in two weeks. In case of a success, Bhutto could have crushed PM Pervez Musharaf's attempt to remain in office.

Bhutto has been before the target of a bomb attack, on October 18 in Karachi , when 138 people dies and other 400 were injured.
