Two huge tanks of fuel set on fire at the Petrobrazi refinery near Ploiesti, some 60 km north of Bucharest on Tuesday morning, Romanian news television stations inform. Some 30 firefighting units were struggling to put down the fire and by 8.00 a.m. only one tank was still burning. Fire there was eventually extinguished by 9.00 a.m. as well.

Prahova county prefect Alexandru Nicolae declared that the situation was under control at the moment and there was no danger that other fuel tanks may catch fire.

The second burning tank contained some 3-4 thousand tons of fuel. The whole area was immediately isolated and no victims were reported.

Prahova emergency operations chief Nicolae Popescu said that firefighters were doing all their best to protect other tanks even if it was a long term operation and requires a lot of cooling materials.
