Shortly after two Liberal Senators accused rival President Basescu of helping Omar Hayssam, a Syrian businessman accused of terrorist acts in Romania, flee the country, the Senate decided on Tuesday to revive a parliamentary investigation into the case by expanding the activity of the subcommittee investigating Hayssam.

The case of Hayssam is under the spotlight again as newspapers published several conversations between Hayssam and a prosecutor recently, where the Syrian confessed that he left the country with a fake Romanian passport.

Liberal Senator Norica Nicolai launched several serious accusations that Romanian President Basescu had something to do with the Syrian. Norica Nicolai was among the Senators that pushed for the Senate's approval to re-open investigation on the case.

Omar Hayssam is accused of terrorism over the kidnapping of three Romanian journalists in Iraq in 2005. He was convicted to 20 years in prison in absence as he fled the country within months after his release from prison on medical grounds more than a year ago.
