Romanian PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu said during a speech before the joint chambers of the Romanian Parliament on Monday evening that Romania would not recognize the independence of Kosovo and reaffirmed that Romania had a coherent position over the issue. He said the Kosovo file had a particular nature and couldn't be considered a precedent. The statement of non-recognition was adopted by the Parliament with 357 votes in favor and 27 against.

The Hungarian Democrats (UDMR), which are part of the government, voted against the decision, provoking discontent among other MPs.

The Parliament says it is worried about the unilateral proclamation of the independence of the Kosovo province by authorities in Pristina on February 17, 2008 and says it does not recognize it because conditions are not fulfilled for the recognition of the new identity.
