A Romanian Academic Society (SAR) report shows that, a year after joining the European Union, our country might face an unprecedented attack of the Romanian Penal Code, considered the basic legal framework of the state's system in the fight against criminal rates. SAR argues that a recent emergency ordinance amending the Code might create the most permissive regime for felons in Europe.

SAR officials argue that even though the draft adopted by the Senate is significantly improved as compared to the initial form sent to promulgation, there still are rulings which might generate serious practical problems.

The report summarizes the law's ups and downs and pinpoint towards solutions, by recommending the elimination of several rulings from the currently adopted amendments. SAR representatives argue that the new project might imperil the whole European Union's capacity to fight efficiently against criminal and terrorist acts.

Moreover, the report underlines the fact that Romania's foreign credibility is affected in case European officials need to work with their Romanian counterparts in their attempt to catch felons whose network expands to Romania also.
