Most of the phishing attacks in Europe were initiated in Romania, during the second half of 2007, a Symantec study indicates. Romania ranks third in this kind of frauds, after China and USA. The online predators target their attacks towards social networks, searching for confidential data, which are then used for obtaining profits.
5% of all phishing sites were detected in Romania, ranking it third worldwide and first in Europe. Phishing is not the only illegal activity in Romania, the country ranking on top spots also for other crimes, mainly online financial frauds. It is assumed that the development of illegal activities is due to the pro-computers culture existing in Romania ever since the Communist regime. the study shows.
