Trans-Atlantic drug traffickers changed their modus operandi to include Romania and Bulgaria as possible transit points for drug trafficking, Europol Director Max Peter Ratzel declared for the Finnish daily Helsingin Sanomat.

He added that the new route is a lot easier and safer for drug dealers given the serious corruption and poverty issues faced by the two countries.

EU expansion also raised mobility options for fellons, Ratzel revealed. However, he pointed out that the EU currently can take advantage of local police forces and resources.
