Romania's Senators approved on Tuesday a draft bill annulling a controversial car tax and allowing those who paid the tax so far to receive their money back. More specifically, the intiative, proposed by Democrat Liberal (PD-L) senators, voids the articles in the Fiscal Code that refer to the car tax. The bill was adopted with 45 votes in favor, six against and one abstention. The law will be debated in the House of Deputies.

According to the document, the Economy Ministry would have to return the money received for the controversial car tax in three months time once it receives a request in this regard. The Government opposed the project on grounds that European officials rejected the law but urged for its replacement and not its elimination.

The Executive adopted an emergency ordinance replacing the first car registration tax with the environmental car tax. The new tax will be enforced starting with July 1.
