Authorities in Rome prepare a set of measures to counter illegal immigration but these do not target citizens of EU member states, Romanian PM Tariceanu declared on Wednesday, after a discussion on the issue with Italian Foreign minister Franco Frattini.

Tariceanu said that Frattini assured him that all European norms and regulations would be respected as Italy prepares to apply the new package of laws. Moreover, he added that Romanian Interior minister Cristian David would visit his Italian counterpart to discuss the creation of a mixed team comprised of both police officers and prosecutors to support Italian authorities.

Berlusconi's newly formed government prepares a set of measures against illegal immigration and Romanian immigrants in Italy are seen as being on the frontline. Former European Justice Commissioner Franco Frattini declared that in the case of Romanians in Italy the situation was clear, as current European Directives will apply to them.
