Moldova President Vladimir Voronin has canceled a televised press statement and delieved a press release in Russian language on Tuesday evening. In his statement Voronin accused the opposition of attempting a coup d'etat to take over power. He said Moldova would defend the integrity of the state against protesters.

According to Voronin, as quoted by AFP and Reuters:

  • Opposition leaders opted to take over power by means of violence
  • Moldova will defend the integrity of the state against protesters, who were "fascists" attempting a coup d'etat
  • All that they (opposition) did over the past 24 hours cannot be describe but as a coup d'etat
