The US visa refusal rate for Romania stood at 26.3% by the end of the 2009 fiscal year (30 September), up 1.3% as compared to the previous year, Romanian news agency NewsIn reports, quoting a list of the US Department for Homeland Security. The main obstacle in Romania efforts to have US visas dropped is a drop of the visa refusal rate to below 3%.

The Romania rate is one of the highest in the EU.

Romanian and US officials have tried to explain the percentage is caused by the fact that they wrongly fill their visa request files or by failure of some to comply with necessary conditions and to understand they should not apply for visa from the very beginning in these circumstances.

The refusal rate is an essential criterion for Romania's inclusion in the Visa Waiver Program.
