Having Mircea Geoana elected Romania's president would be both in Romania's and the EU interest, leader of the socialist group from the European Parliament Martin Schulz declared on Tuesday during a press conference.

"I've been to Romania before the first tour and I will return, if necessary, to support Mircea Geoana", the German MEP added during the press conference in Strasbourg, where the European parliament plenary session takes place.

Asked what is his position on agreement between the Romanian social-democrats and liberals, Schulz referred to "the European tradition of governing coalitions" and claimed that the person to win the presidential elections would have to seek a parliamentary majority.

"I trust that Mircea Geoana will win the elections, which is in both Romania and the EU's overall interest", Schulz concluded.
