Victor Hanescu qualified in the second round in Australian Open, after defeating Argentinean Juan Ignacio Chela. The match was over in two hours and 17 minutes, score 6-4, 6-3, 7-6 (2) for the Romanian. Victor Hanescu will meet Roger Federer, no. 1 worldwide, in the second round of the year's first Grand Slem competition.

The Romanian started the game in force, leading 5-2 at some point in the first set. Victor Hanescu had several set balls at 5-4 during his own service, but the Argentinean finally managed the break. But Chela was not consistent enough in the next game, and Hanescu took advantage, winning the firs set, score 6-4 in 40 minutes.

The match continued in the same spirit in the second set as well, with Hanescu managing to cover the field quite well, against an insecure Chela. The Romanian got the break very early in the debut of the set and, after 40 minutes of tennis, the score read 6-3.

In the third set, the game was more balanced, each of the two winning their own service until the score read 3-3. In the seventh game, Hanescu wins superbly and ticks the set's first break. The Romanian leads 5-3, but the Argentinean wins during Victor's service and the score reads 5-5. The competition gets tighter and tighter and the set ends with tie-break, 7-2 for Hane.

Victor Hanescu and Juan Ignacio Chela have played against each other twice so far, with Hanescu winning each time (Wimbledon - 2003/ 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 and Roland Garros - 2005/ 7-5, 6-1, 2-6, 7-5).

On Monday morning, Romanian tennis player Sorana Cirstea qualified in women's second round of Australian Open. She is to meet Russian Alisa Kleybanova. Romanian tennis player Monica Niculescu and Edina Gallovits have already left the competition.
