Singapore Foreign Affairs minister, George Yeo talked in the Parliament about the case of the Romanian diplomat Silviu Ionescu and underlined the necessity to respect legal procedures and not be influenced by the media, Channel News Asia informs. He underlined that local authorities do not tolerate the abuse of diplomatic immunity .

Some criticized the government for not taking immediate action, Yeo said. However, he underlined that authorities will take only legal steps and will not undertake a process in the media.

Yeo explained that at the time Ionescu left the country in December, the police did not finish the investigation and explained that he could not be compelled not to leave the country as he had diplomatic immunity.

Yeo said that Romania's Foreign Affairs spokesperson declared that the ministry will not tolerate an abuse of power and that it will sustain the position that the diplomatic immunity is not an excuse to break the law.
