Romania's National Integrity Agency notified a Bucharest court on Monday about an investigation on suspicion of false statements against Bucharest District 5 mayor Marian Vanghelie, who also serves as top leader of the opposition Social Democratic Party.

The agency says that following checks on Vanghelie's wealth and interest statements during 2004-2008 several irregularities appeared regarding the acquisition of an apartment, his involvement in a company and his shares in several funds.

Romanian news agency Mediafax quoted Vanghelie on Monday saying he was not bothered by the announcement as the Integrity Agency announced checks on his statements a year and a half ago.
