Romanian President Traian Basescu received the OSCE Higher Commissioner for Minorities, Knut Vollebaek whom he told that the most sensitive problem is that of the Roma minorities and promised that authorities will be tougher and will refuse to pay children aid if parents do not send their children to school.

The chief of state said, in the meeting that the most sensitive issue is that of the Roma. There is a lack of understanding on the depth of this issue, Basescu said. He underlined that Romania takes responsibility of its citizens but also calls for European cooperation.

He said that any suggestion on how to address the Roma problem is welcomed.
