A Romanian company was supposed to export automatic guns to Libya based on a contract after London refused to offer export license to a British company, fearing that the guns might reach sensitive areas, a US diplomatic cable from 2008 reads, released by Wikileaks and quoted by the Romanian news agency Mediafax.

The cable is written by the American Embassy to Tripoli on November 6, 2008. According to it, the British company York Guns should have exported to Libya 130,000 automatic Kalashnikov guns. However, the British Embassy in Tripoli feared that the Libyan government might re-export the guns to other places in Sudan or Chad.

Therefore, the British government did not approve the export license for York Guns. In exchange, the Libyan government signed a contract with a Romanian company, NFI to export from Romania to Libya 100,000 AK47 automatic guns.
