The report is factual, noting significant progresses made at most levels that the EC and the state seek together, both in the reform of the judiciary and the fight against corruption, Agriculture Commissioner Dacian Ciolos commented on the EC report on justice released on Friday. Just like any such document, and even more because it is interim, we should not diminish the appraisals nor exaggerate them, he said. It is just one step in the way Romania needs to take with calm and firmness, it not for the European Commission or anybody else, it is for its own sake, Ciolos said.

He underlined that the next steps need to be taken with determination, responsibility and political cooperation and on line with the essential role taken by magistrates who have the possibility now to manifest their independence and professionalism. It is a matter of national pride to see this mechanism unnecessary, Ciolos concluded.
