EC report proves that the Democratic Liberal Party and the ruling coalition push Romania downwards, Senate’s Speaker Mircea Geoana declared, quoted by news agency Agerpres. Geoana appreciated the Commission’s position that there is no connection between the Cooperation and Verification Mechanism and Romania’s joining Schengen and claims that Romania needs to have the same treatment as any other EU member state when it comes to Schengen.

The EC report contains only technical reports and lacks any political mentions but this should not make us believe that Romania complied with all objectives of the Mechanism or that we managed to pass through the toughest period in our fight against corruption, the Senate’s Speaker warns.

According to Geoana, the report shows once and for all that the Parliament is the one that blocks the judiciary from investigating high corruption cases and this refers to the Democratic Liberal Party directly. The Ridzi and Pasat case, which are mentioned in the report, are the sole responsibility of the ruling coalition, who failed to lift the immunity of their colleagues and let justice take its course, Geoana said.
