Romania’s railway company, CFR holds 1,000 km of unused railway which is why the ministry will shut them, Transports minister Anca Boagiu declared in a seminar organized by daily Ziarul Financiar. The minister said that another 4,000 km of railway will be rented by private operators. The network has over 20,000 km of railway and the ministry plans to decrease it to 15,000 km.

She said that it is just a part of the restructuring plan the Transports ministry has considering that the company accumulated in the last 10 years huge debts. Transports minister Anca Boagiu said that part of the railway network is being rehabilitated and said that starting 2013 trains will run with 160 km/hour.
