The executive took responsibility in the Parliament for the law on education for 2011 and for the social dialogue code. PM Boc said that the government’s decision to take responsibility on the laws is necessary because Romania cannot sustain a 50% increase in professor’s salaries.

His most important statements

  • Today, Romania’s economy does not have the financial resources to afford an increase of the professors salaries
  • Any salary increase must be sustained by the economy and because of the different practices, professors have different salaries across counties
  • Boc claimed that it is not about ceiling salaries or freezing them but that this is a law that rules that in 2011 salaries cannot be increased by 50%
  • The Prime Minister claims that 90% of the professors will not feel any difference in their salaries compared to their January salary

Moreover, the government took responsibility for a second law, on social dialogue. Collective contracts at the national level need to be eliminated because they create imbalances, PM Boc says quoted by Romanian news agency Mediafax. He reminded that the project regulates collective work contracts at the level of sectors and claimed that such deals are a valid practice in most European states. Boc said that the code consolidates the role of unions in the sectors.
