US Ambassador to Bucharest, H.E. Mark Gitenstein said that the decision of the Romanian Constitutional Court on the constitutionality of the proposals to modify the constitution are worrisome because it stalls the efforts to consolidate justice and fight against corruption in Romania, a press release of the Embassy reads.

According to Gitenstein, the decision takes away the decision from the citizens’ hands. Constitutional Court judges decided that there are unconstitutional elements in the project revising the Constitution. The American official said that the Romanian citizens should be allowed to freely analyze the changes proposed through their representatives. In a democratic republic, the modification of the Constitution should not depend on the whims of those who temporarily hold majority, the press release reads. The people should have the power to correct the errors.
