Dozens of Romanians have been evacuated from the area of San Diego, California as uncontrolled fires causing chaos in the state reached their homes on Wednesday.

In California alone, some 500,000 persons abandoned their homes.

At least one house belonging to a Romanian family was engulfed by the fires, Romanian news station Realitatea TV has reported.

Some 8,000 firefighters were desperately trying to put out the fire, but this seemed way out of their hands. Californian Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger requested President Bush to declare the situation ‘a major calamity’ so that the state can receive federal aid.

The Pentagon has already sent 6 military airplanes transporting water to areas most affected by fires.
