Several Romanian delegations of Romanian mayors, invited to attend the Chisinau city festival were denied access in the Republic of Moldova last weekend. The interdiction ignored an Moldovan law stating that all EU citizens are allowed to enter the Republic of Moldova without a visa.

Romanian President Traian Basescu said the situation was unacceptable and Romanian PM Calin Popescu Tariceanu stated his concern about Moldova’s attitude. Romania's Foreign minister also said the gesture was essentially political and premeditated.

Only Bucharest representatives were allowed into the country while other Romanian county-level delegations were not permitted to enter, Radio Romania Actualitati informed.

Chisinau mayor Dorin Chirtoaca said he tried to contact Moldova PM Vasile Tarlev for explanations but without success. He said that whatever reasons local authorities had in denying access of the Romanian delegation, these were illegal.
