The commerce is the main area in which businesses go bankrupt, a study conducted by Coface Romania indicates. During the first semester of the year, over 7,400 companies faced various stages of insolvency, all acting in retail and distribution. The number totals 23% of all bankruptcies in Romania.

The commerce field is followed by the food industry, construction and agriculture.

The study authors estimate that the high rate of bankruptcy in retail is due to the fast spreading of retail chains in middle-sized cities and the increasing preference of consumers towards supermarkets.

The lack of experience, human resources and the debts were the main problems faced by construction businesses.

The lowest bankruptcy risk is currently found in the energy field, in extraction businesses and IT.
