"Romania lost 1.4 million citizens in the last 17 years due to migration and decreasing birth rates and, even if we take fertility measures, the population will see some growth only in 2060".

The troubling statement was made on Tuesday by the Romanian President Traian Basescu at the International Conference “Romanians, where to?” in Sibiu, the European Cultural Capital in 2007.

According to the President, the numbers are warring and authorities need to urgently revise their demographic policies.

Also, the President outlined the main fields in which the demographic change is being felt namely in the health system or in education.

The main solution envisaged by Basescu was a solid policy imposing economic solidarity and social cohesion to raise birth rates.
