Bucharest prefect Mioara Mantale was replaced by her deputy, Catalin Deaconescu, government spokeswoman Camelia Spataru announced on Tuesday. Mantale will be deputy prefect in Deaconescu's place.

Various other prefects have been changed in counties across Romania. The government explained the change due to organizational changes.

Catalin Deaconescu, former vice-president of the National Liberal Party (the governing party in Romania) in Bucharest in June-December 2005, is a graduate of the Public Administration Faculty.

He replaces Mantale, a former member of the Democratic Party, which was forced out of the governing alliance with the Liberals in spring this year.

The decision comes after three weeks ago, the government replaced another six prefects, some of them members of the Democratic Party.

Mioara Mantale said in a press conference that she was not informed of the change which she considers to be unjust.
