The Parliamentary Commission on the electoral code decided on Tuesday to take on the ProDemocratia draft to introduce an uninominal voting system in Romania. The project is due to be sent to the Senate. The decision was taken with ten votes for and two abstentions.

During the meeting, the Social Democrat (PSD, opposition) Anghel Stanciu resigned from the commission as a form of protest against the adopted project.

As the project is assumed, the commission rejects other legislative proposals regarding the electoral code modification. Among these, a text proposed by the Social Democratic Party.

The ProDemocratia project establishes that both the senators and deputies will be elected in uninominal precincts. The mandates for second and third places will be distributed according to the each party’s importance at the national level.
