Moldovan President Vladimir Voronin has announced that two Romanian consulates will not open in the cities of Balti and Cahul and Cahul as diplomatic and political tensions between Romania and the Republic of Moldova have been intensifying.

According to Romanian agency Rador, Voronin did not offer any explanation for the decision even if it comes in the midst of the visa scandal among Bucharest and Chisinau.

According to Rador, quoting RFI, Voronin said that he never promised Romanian President Traian Basescu that his country would open two consulates in Cahul and Balti even if on January 2007 Voronin himself said that there is an urgency to open the two consulates.

The statements come two weeks after accusations arose about a bribes-for-visa case involving personnel at the Romanian Embassy in the Republic of Moldova.
